good quality bit but the spade would not stay in the bit while drilling a 3" hole in a 6" creosote post

This seemed like a great idea; revisiting the old brace-and-bit adjustable wood boring bit with a shank for a power drill. The old models had lead screws; this one just has a locating point. I set the bit to 2-3/8, midway in its range, and tried as hard as I could to drill a hole in a 2x4. I put the 2x4 in a vise, used a sturdy 1/2 inch corded drill, and put my weight behind it. I never got even a half inch deep. ( I live in California, so a standard 2x4 is Doug fir, not pine, so it's tougher. But still, my other drills will all cut through a Doug fir 2x4. ) Bit is useless unless maybe I can figure a way to sharpen it, but without a lead screw it still probably won't work. One star is about right because it's a good idea, but. it needs to work.

Instantly burned and destroyed project board (and cutter) at lowest speed in drill press on first cut. Cutter is extremely poorly finished. The unused cutter is rough, dull, and covered in tooling marks.Save your money and buy the obscurely sized forstner bit, this is absolutely useless.

The item was not exactly as the photo showed but did match the description. The item we were looking for was discontinued by the manufacturer but the seller shows it has both items, even though it is only one model for both. The photo is outdated. For purchasing tools, best to check with the manufacturer that it is the exact item you need.Item did arrive in excellent condition, and within promised delivery time.

Love that it can drill any size hole in wood that I need, obviously within its range size.

This is a solid, adjustable piece meant to dig perfectly round holes out of wood. It arrived well packaged in a plastic sleeve for protection, with all parts intact and ready to work!

Excellent product and was glad to find it on Amazon. Had to drill odd diameter holes for piping for a back porch railing. This tool was the ONLY way that could have happened.

Only good for really rough-in projects. The center of the bit is not centered with the shank so there is a sever wobble. Need to pry it apart with a screwdriver to adjust it. Good concept, but made poorly.

Might be a good product. Not really doing the job I needed it for. Drilling. 2 3/4 in hole in. 4" thick tree stump!

The good points of the Irwin Lockhead Adjustable Wood Bit is that it gives you the ability to drill holes to your specific requirements. The bad point is not really bad but the bit is a little difficult to adjust to get an exact hole size. There is a gague on the bit but it is only a rough measurement for the diameter that you need. To get an exact size you need to drill a hole and measure the diameter and adjust the bit until you get the size needed. This bit is not balanced because of the offset to the adjustible cutter so it needs to be used in a drill press at slow speed.
