It lights semi-well, but it only has two brightness settings regardless of how wide open you make the flow knob. You have to turn it fairly far to the open side to even get it to light, and you choice is low light, or bright light. The gas knob rotates a goodly distance to the "wide open", but once past the first two or three rotations, the lantern is at max brightness. Getting it low is super fiddly to avoid it guttering out.I had a credit which I used to buy this, so I'm not out the price, but I definitely won't buy another one of these. Stick with a better known brand, and don't waste your money.

UPDATE!!I was impressed that the seller reached out and sent me a replacement lantern. Well the valve on that lantern failed the second time I used it. No gas will flow at all. I’ve done everything except disassemble the unit. Save your money. These are JUNK! Unless hey provide one that works I will not buy from this company again. Lesson learned. The video shows the lantern giving off a bright white usable light. I don't know if the one I bought is defective or if the seller was deceptive in selling me a lantern that isn't very bright. This isn't my first propane lantern but it's my first to use the small butane/propane canisters and that's what made me want one. I carbonized the mantle, per the instructions in the video, until it was white and then reassembled the lantern before firing it up. The electronic starter doesn't always work and when it does the lantern only produces a dull yellow light, even when the gas is fully open. It's not enough light to be useful. FYI - the gas flow doesn't increase after the first 1/2 to 3/4 of a turn even though the knob will continue turning. I am using good quality fuel and tried two different canisters from two different manufacturers, so that's not the issue.I really wanted to try out and have this little lantern for camping and emergencies but right now it's about as bright as an old incandescent flashlight with weak batteries. Would like to recommend but can't and unless I somehow got a bad one, I'd say save your money.

Sometimes the old-school Colman gas lanterns are to big and cumbersome. I have seen similar lanterns over the years but didn't feel like replacing my trusty Colman lantern. I'm glad I got this. It is very compact and easily stored in my bag. It still has a good amount of light to see in the darkness while being able to work around the campsite. It's just a little bigger than the candel lantern I have but adds more light. Very happy with this purchase and will most likely order another one.
