I buy about one of these a year from this one or one of the other choices. I use the wood from everything from woodworking/crafts to home repair patches. This latest batch is mixed feelings. The pros some pretty dark woods about half I’d say. Nice change from the usual lighter woods I get.Con’s is that there are a lot of knots in this batch and some of the wood has small holes in it. And of course everyone wish that it was labeled.

Thought I'd take a risk and get this box of assorted wood. According to the reviews it could be a hit or miss. Saw that some buyers messaged the seller before they ordered, but I didn't do that.Decided that this was part of the excitement of getting a box with random hardwood. I am very satisfied. Shipped early (got it about 3-4 days early). And the box contained a good variety. Primarily cherry, oak, red cedar, and some walnut! (I didn't know how to identify the wood, but used another customers pictures for reference). I would purchase from them again

When receiving these kind of boxes and their ilk, were usually talking maple, hickory, red, white, and Oak and American Black Walnut. Without dispute, Black Walnut is the most coveted, most valuable, of what it could be. Without dispute! The most valuable cut of the tree is it's live edges. Folks I just got overwhelmed flooded by a box of mixture off live edge and riftsawn cuts all Black Walnut. Now I can't imagine they have the resources to do that for everyone however what I CAN promise you is that whoever is putting these boxes together cares for you to get value above the others. EXotic Wood Zone, Change the buyer, but you GET what you pay for without doubt.

Underwood expert so you guys will have to tell me what varieties I’ve got. Pictured of the two boxes. The first appeared to be pretty clearly five or possibly six varieties of wood. At least a couple pieces that I’m pretty sure I poplar… But mostly was harder stuff that I could guess at but couldn’t say for sure. The material in the second box was a lot more varied although it may not be any more varieties I just couldn’t collect the varieties as well by my uneducated eye. Only thing I could be definitely sure of is I’m almost positive the red stuff is aromatic red cedar because it’s got a strong cedar smell to it.The boxes were roughly 16 to 17 pounds which is close enough to 20 in my opinion and they were both very full.I only really found one sizable knot (visible in pics) in the entire lot and no splits. all in all it’s like a really nice collection of wood. I’m planning to make butcher block out of it, so I’m gonna do my best to ID what I got to make sure I’m not using anything I shouldn’t in a butcher block…edit: I've since ordered 3 or 4 more. All but the most recent one were consistently 16lbs and roughly the same mix as above.Last box appears to be mostly oak/maple, a little poplar and walnut... and then one board that is pretty clearly pine... and a very soft example of pine at that (almost feels like balsa). There was more empty space in the box than usual... and the pine was a bit unexpected. Weight 15lbs 4 oz. By far the worst box so far... so take this as the worst case. Not a bad deal still... but come on... pine? In a hardwood box? Still the best deal I've seen.Of the 5-6 boxes I've gotten... I'd say it's been about 40% 4x1, 30% 2x1, 10% 6x1, 10% other random width 1" boards, and

Size and thickness of boards was good but overall quality was very disappointing. Two of the larger boards had very large open knots and another had multiple cracks half way down the length of the board. Those three board are useless. Other board had a few checks and cracks but left enough useful wood to be worth while pieces. Overall it was not a good value for me and I feel taken advantage of. I expected short or small pieces but did expect more of the box to be useful. This was not a good value for me and will not buy it again.

I ordered my box of cutoff's from Woodchucks Woods and it took 8 days to arrive from order date. Most of the boards were 3/4 - 1" in thickness and ~12" long with varying widths. The variety was also nice. Some oak, black walnut, and other species I have yet to identify. The wood was not labeled. Some of the pieces had knots, cracks, and uneven edges and thickness. I'm using these for inlays, so they'll still work perfectly. Product arrived perfectly as described.

First and foremost, you are purchasing a box of scraps. Keep that in mind. Second, you're getting 20 pounds instead of 10 (like that other listing for exotic cutoffs) for about the same price. Third, these are the domestic hardwoods, not the exotic ones. This is a grab-bag of assorted sizes and species. I lucked out and got a nice variety. I can understand people's disappointment at getting a box full of all the same type of wood, but you're taking a chance with this purchase. My advice to Rockler: tell your guy that packs these things to keep a stash of the most coveted species behind his desk and if there's ever a box that is mostly just one or two of the same type of wood, throw in a piece of that good stuff from his stash.I would purchase this again, but not for a while. I got it because, like many of the other people who reviewed it, I am new to woodworking and just wanted some scraps with which to practice making little things. I give this 4 stars for the value. It sure beats the price of scraps at Woodcraft and you don't even have to leave your house to get them. If it were to come down in price and include fewer cracked pieces (hint, hint, Rockler, your ratings are taking a hit because people don't like getting bad pieces even if it is expected and mentioned in the description of the product), I'd make it a 5 star rating.
