If you buy just one Stave Craft snare, buy the Ash version. I was looking at buying a used one, but I found a brand new one on Amazon at a much cheaper price (much lower than retail). I own the Thai Oak and Makha versions and I prefer the Ashwood version of the 3. It has a sharper tone much like birch and a more open sound compared to the other 2. I even left the stock Remo CS head and added some light dampening to find the sound I was looking for. Rimshots sound great on this snare. Some additional notes:- Don't let the 1.0" thick solid shell fool you. It sounds great at all volume levels from a whisper (great sensitivity) to full on max volume. You will definitely appreciate this snare if you're a heavy hitter.. it doesn't sound choked at full volume like a thin shell snare does and it sounds great at lower volume.- Pearl always cuts a great bearing edge on their drums and this one is no different. This along with the excellent STL65 lugs (for the 6.5" version) and Mastercast hoops allows for easy and precise tuning. These are worlds better compared to the common tube lugs used on different snares on the market.- The above features makes this a very versatile snare that can easily accomodate different playing styles and tunings and the countless snare heads on the market. This snare sounds great live and when recording.- Right now this is my main and preferred snare drum. I have a small snare collection consisting of Pearl Brass Reference, Ultracast, the other Pearl Stave Crafts, Gretsch 3mm Steel Snare (a great snare, hate the strainer), and a Ludwig Epic Brick snare. I've owned other thick shelled snare such as the Pearl Reference and PDP 20 ply and the Stave Craft Ash sounds much better. I've experiments with many head configurations and tuning on all of the snares and I prefer the ASh Stave Craft.Closing comments: everyone has a preference for snare drums and the sounds of the snare they try to emulate, whether a live sound they heard or a recorded snare they cherish. The Pearl Ashwood Stave Craft is a snare that can help one get closer to that sound while offering a wide array of sounds and tunings. It's definitely worthy of being the "only snare to own" if you own just one snare.

My first ever Pearl snare drum!It looks great and sounds amazing. I’ve owned other stave snare drums and none has been as powerful, open sounding or with as much personality as this one. I bought it right after I bought a Reference kit( my first ever Pearl product) because I liked them so much. This is truly an outstanding snare drum and certainly a keeper.
