About this item

  • [EXCLUSIVELY BY PENGUIN POTTERY!] - After many months of research, Penguin Pottery is introducing the first Glow in the Dark glaze for ceramics and pottery! We are so excited to bring you this amazing new ceramic glaze line and can't wait to see what you create! Check out the video we made, you're going to love it! Just in time for Halloween! Get everyone's attention making original decorations for special occasions. Great Christmas gift and original birthday gift.
  • [EASY TO USE] - You can paint our glow in the dark glaze onto greenware, bisqueware or already-glazed finished work . This glaze should be fired to a fast cone 06. Any hotter and the glaze may lose its glow. Contents may settle at the bottom of the jar. Stir with every dip of your brush. The glow glaze doesn’t have a glossy smooth finish and that’s normal. For a glossy finish, cover it with our low fire clear glaze formulated (sold separately) and fire them together at cone 06.
  • [FIRE IN POTTERY KILN] - Pottery glaze must be fired in a pottery kiln. Do not fired in a kitchen oven. Ceramic glazes are classified according to a temperature range ("cone") in three general groups: "low-fire," "mid-fire," and "high-fire." Your ceramic kiln must be temperature calibrated to confirm it is firing at the target temperature / cone. Our glow glaze is nontoxic but has not been tested for food safety. We don’t recommend painting this glaze on surfaces that will have food on them.
  • [GET IT GLOWING!] - After you fire your ceramic, expose it to UV light, daylight, ultraviolet light, etc. The fired glaze stores the light energy and then slowly releases over time. At night or in a dark room, you will see the luminescence. Tip: the longer you expose the fired glaze to light, the longer it will radiate afterwards.
  • [LIFETIME WARRANTY] - All Penguin Pottery products are backed by our Lifetime Warranty. See warranty & support section for more information. If you have any issues, we will give you a refund or replace your board - no questions asked!
  • Try painting a design of underglaze over our glow glaze to really highlight your work in the dark!
  • Have a high fired piece you want to add glow to? Treat our Glow Glaze like a specialty third firing and paint right on top of finished wares. Fire to a fast cone 06 (no holds) and enjoy the glow in the dark glaze on any piece.

How to Get Great Results with Our Glazes

mix well before using

Mix Well Before Using

Sometimes glaze contents will settle. That's normal! Just like house paints, ceramic glazes need to be fully mixed to ensure smooth consistency. We recommend mixing well for at least 1-2 minutes.

choose how to apply

Choose How to Apply

You can apply glazes either by (a) dipping your bisqued piece into the glaze or (b) brushing it on. Our glazes are ready to apply with a brush. If you're looking to dip, we recommend applying a dispersing agent like Darvan.

remove dust from bisque

Remove Dust from Bisque

Removing all dust from your bisque-fired piece is critical to ensure a good outcome. Clean moist sponges are best. Make sure your piece is completely dry before glazing!

fire glaze to correct cone

Fire Glaze to Correct Cone

Ceramic glazes are classified according to a temperature range ("cone") in three general groups: "low-fire," "mid-fire," and "high-fire." Over-firing will damage the piece/possibly the kiln, and under-firing will just give you ugly results.

a note on the art of glazing ceramics

A Note on the Art of Glazing Ceramics

One of the fascinating aspects of ceramics is the slight variations we can achieve by using different clay bodies, glaze types and firing methods. It's like vintage film photography - you don't know what it'll look like until you get it out of the kiln! Glazes will react differently (and look different) depending on several factors, including:

  • The temperature at which they're fired: even small changes in temperature can lead to different outcomes.
  • The clay body on which the glaze is applied: the same glaze will look different if applied to a darker vs. lighter clay.
  • The speed at which your kiln reaches the target temperature.
  • How much oxygen is in the kiln's atmosphere while firing.

That is why ceramics is an art! We recommend you experiment with different approaches and, most importantly, embrace the uncertainty. You will have a lot of fun seeing different results!

Applied as directed and fired in our raku firing. 1900 degrees worked well. first firing was under and it bubbled and blistered, but the second was spot on 1900 and it came out great.

I followed the directions, mixed the glaze well, fired at cone 6, exposed to light and it still did not glow.
