The hex head allows for lag screws to be tightened with more torque than can be used on Phillips head screws, though a pilot hole is still required prior to installation. Note that lag screws do not accept nuts as they are technically thick heavy duty wood screws with threads designed to cut into wood. They are ideal for use on decks since installation can be accomplished without having access to both ends of the fastener, as opposed to standard hex bolts that require a nut on the opposite end.

We used these for floating shelves. We predrilled the studs, ran the lag in about halfway, cut off the heads of the lags, pushed the cedar 6x6 cut in half against the screw which made a dent, drilled the hole and slid the shelves on to the screws. The process was relatively simple and quick.

I am assembling a heavy duty wood shop work station. Even with pilot holes drilled, these lag bolts break at the point the threads become shank 1:3 times when applying enough torque to drive the screw. Maybe they are too small in diameter, but these are disappointing and most certainly poor temper quality. Do not buy these for anything but the softest materials and light duty OR drill pilot holes of only slightly smaller diameter than the screw. I cannot recommend these.

Beware!!These bent- broke going into Pine -unbelievably poor grade steel. Alum or lead is stronger than these.
