The hex head allows for lag screws to be tightened with more torque than can be used on Phillips head screws, though a pilot hole is still required prior to installation. Note that lag screws do not accept nuts as they are technically thick heavy duty wood screws with threads designed to cut into wood. They are ideal for use on decks since installation can be accomplished without having access to both ends of the fastener, as opposed to standard hex bolts that require a nut on the opposite end.

Well all the stainless hardware I usually buy is not magnetic, thought I would try these due to being cheaper, not 100% sure there stainless they cling to a magnet faster then a regular bolt

Not exactly as pictured. Listed and labeled as “3/8 inch” (which is 0.375) but they are slightly smaller. The picture on Amazon shows a full-size shaft just under the bolt head tapering off to a smaller diameter where the threads start. But on the actual bolts, there is no full-diameter shaft and the threads start immediately under the bolt head. The spec for hex lag screws (ASME B18.2.1-1996) calls for a major thread diameter range of 0.360-0.388. These bolts are at the low end of that range, nowhere near 0.375. I measured three bolts, all three at 0.360. So, officially, they are in spec, but if you need them to really be 3/8…like I did…they’re not. For my application, I was counting on the full-diameter shaft under the head, as pictured (to fully occupy a hole in a metal mounting plate), but they don’t match the picture. If you need a bolt with full-diameter threadless shaft portion under the head, order a longer length. If you need the lag screw to be closer to 3/8, I suggest contacting the manufacturer and asking before ordering. I won’t buy this brand again, there are other, higher quality sources.

As with all stainless steel products you never know what the quality of the metal is until you expose it to salt water. If it passes the test I will then give it five stars.
