This is clearly not a toy (despite Amazon's classification). It is an inexpensive (Chinese) reproduction of the original Dietz lanterns of the 19th and early 20th century. These lanterns are a good value if you only use them occasionally when the electric power is out and you want to provide light in your home. The metal that is used is not heavy duty and won't stand daily or weekly use for very long yet the lamps work exactly as they are intended to work. These are kerosene lanterns and as such work best with kerosene. You need a little experience with these types of lanterns to know how best to light them and how high to set the wick in order to prevent the lantern from smoking. Our grandparents and great-grandparents knew how to do these things but we need to discover these skills again it seems. There is and will be a slight kerosene odor but I find it more than acceptable. I generally fill the lamps on my deck so that any spills don't cause a problem or undo odor. I suggest you do the same. A small funnel (not included) helps with filling these lanterns.I bought three of these and a year later I purchased some more heavy duty lanterns from W.T. Kirkman (Lanternnet) that are not sold thru Amazon. Those can be used daily and would last a very long time as several models are stainless steel. In any event, you absolutely must have kerosene lanterns as part of your emergency prep supplies, and these fit that function just fine. I rate them 3.5 to 4 stars for that purpose.

I bought three of these lanterns for approx. $10 each. I am slightly disappointed in the overall quality. Not disappointed enough to bother returning them though.Pros: Relatively inexpensive, decorative, cute, nice colorful touch for patio parties and possibly light-duty emergency lighting.Cons: They are quite lightweight and not intended to last a lifetime. I believe they are made of tin. They are marked with a sticker on the outside of the metal reservoir that says "do not fill above this line" but the trouble is, you can't see when you're filling the lantern when you get up to the line. You just have to guess. There is a little lever that lifts the glass part up and down, so you can light it. It's very apparent that this little lever is not heavy duty enough to withstand the pressure you have to put on it to raise the glass - after raising the glass just once, the lever bent, and I can tell it will eventually break. You can raise the glass manually with your hands, without using the lever. If you are looking for a whimsical decorative touch to your patio, this will probably do just fine; just don't expect it to last forever. If you are looking for a quality piece that will function well for years and years, you'd do better to keep looking, and invest in a heavy duty brass lantern.

I bought the red 12" Kerosene Lantern from Amazon. For what it is worth, Walmart and other local retailers do sell similiar models of Kerosene lanterns. The lantern I purchased from Walmart feels cheap compared to the one I bought here though. The walmart version was slightly smaller and cheaper feeling, but did cost a little less. This one is slightly bigger, more stable, and more stylish than the Walmart version. The red color gives it a bright and stylish look. The glass slides up to allow access to the wick. There is a wire connected to the two arms of the lantern so that you can hang it up. The wick itself is a half inch wick and there is no room in the design for a larger wick, so if you have a 3/4 inch or 1 inch wick please note that it will not fit. The design for this lantern is for a 1/2 wick. Also, I found it hard to locate replacement wicks initially as Walmart keeps the replacement wicks in the camping section and not the lighting section by the lamps. Walmart is just slightly cheaper than Amazon to buy the replacement wicks. The base is stable and as long as you only fill to the clearly marked line, it won't spill. The light that is given out is sufficient. Shipping was fast and came boxed appropriately. No issues with the seller.

Have several other of these and they are sturdier and "controls" work much more smoothly. Tank is smaller on these. Will do in a pinch. Will use these with citronella oil as I have others in the Spring through Fall.I'll buy the local ones next time.

A great value for a great product; namely "Plan C" for lighting.Oh, "Plan C" - Plan A is when there is power at the house and all is well; Plan B is when the power goes out I use flashlights. When and if the spare batteries are shot on the flashlights... "Plan C." This lantern.I bought one to test out. It illuminates a small room and one can read with it.With good quality fuel and with the wick properly adjusted (easy) there is absolutely NO odor or soot. The only thing to point out is that if you happen to be a dim-wit like me and miss the clear directions to "not fill above this line" the fuel will leak out. Again, this was my bad.I plan to buy a couple more of this same model along with spare wicks. Again: a great product for a great price.~B
