Most flats are more ribbon wound. I have used 77's for many years and recently tried many other brands. For old school flats that sound 6 years old out of the box I love Labella Deep Talking. I tried several pressure wound and swedged semi round and after a couple of hundred dollars have gone back to the 77's even discarding new sets of the others. DIdn't care for the 55's, too rough

I love the way they sound. But ever other pack i buy the G string breaks putting it on my bass. Never experienced this with any other brand in the past 25 years of playing.
High strings will come loose. Best or worst?

The reason why I have chosen to give rotosound flats an F is for the consistent failure to make a g and d string that won’t come loose from the core. I have spent hundreds of dollars trying to get a pair of flats over the years from this company and I had given up. I don’t know why I decided to try again but it was the same thing. Dead D string straight out of the pack.I highly recommend you save your time and money. I’ve emailed rotosound and have gotten replacement strings from them and they were dead. I don’t recommend this company for flats.

I have used these strings many times over the years and they never disappoint me. I have these on a Sire P7 five string (P/J active bass) now, also had them on my MIA Fender P for a while (I sold that bass), and a couple other Precision-style basses. If you’re looking for that classic “old school” sound for your Precision-style bass, these give you THE sound you’re probably looking for. They have a piano-like high end with a very meaty low end, not thumpy and dead like some other flats (GHS in particular). Personally I feel like these have a lot of depth and a very unique tonal quality that I don’t hear in others, for me it’s the sound I have in my head when I think “classic P-bass”. These will bark pretty well when you dig in and get used to them. Virtually zero finger noise, and very easy to play. I’m not a fan of flats on a jazz bass, but these I think would be really decent if you like that sound. The downside, as with all flats (unless you’re getting some of the low-tension ones offered out there) is..the tension. You’ll likely need a new setup, at the very least the neck relief, if you’re coming off round wounds with the same gauge. Also, they do require more effort to play and they are stiff for your plucking hand. For me these are 5-star strings and always have been. If you want the benefits of flats, but want something with a very unique, layered sound, these might just be for you. I’m personally glad to be playing them and would highly recommend them.

I love the way these sound and play. They are so much easier on your fingers when you move up and down the fret board. And you don’t get the scratchy sound of the round wound either as you move up and down the string. The sound quality is very clear.

I have 4 basses and 6 guitars all with flatwounds of different brands. These are by far the smoothest and best sounding of any of them. I know everyone has there own preferences but for me it's Rotosound!

Despite Rotosound being around for decades and me playing for 30 years I had never tried them before. It was an advert featuring Iron Maiden's Steve Harris that convinced me to try them. I had heard they were far higher tension than the strings I had been using and as expected my bass needed a set up - I can do that myself so after 10 minutes of tweaking it was all set up.The sound is very versatile. With the tone control at full the sound is bright and clear and gets clanky when digging in. With the tone control at zero there is a very nice old school rhythm & blues sound - perfect for those Duck Dunn bass lines. No need to tweak the amp settings at all.The best bit though is how strong the B string is. So many string companies making flatwounds seem to fail miserably on the B string even if the others are very good. Not the case with these. The B is strong and clear with a great fundamental. It sounds balanced with the other strings.First rehearsal with them is in a week's time. It's with a local educational trust group that has many ensembles playing big band jazz, rock, pop, film scores, etc etc. Looking forward to finding out how they sit in the mix. That will be the true test - but at the moment I am very happy indeed.

I have always used rounds, but after realising the frets on my year old American Elite were getting chewed up (I play a lot) I decided to take the plunge on flats to preserve the frets. .I like a warm tone so the difference in sound wasn't going to be an issue for me, in fact I was looking forward to a change. The plunge for me was setting up for the flats. . . But setting for flats is better than sorting new frets in time. . Well, these strings only differ from the std jazz gauge on the B, but the B is beefy at .130, so I expected some movement on the neck. . I was right in that I probably tightened the neck by maybe 1/3 or 1/4 turn, and after a month or two it seems to have stayed put. No adjustment to string height was made as the neck sorted that out. . Tune wise, you do have some movement for a little while after but it seems to settle down after 2-3 weeks. . Also, I took a chance and strung these through the body, not through the bridge, and I've had no issues in doing this so far. . And the .130 sits in the nut no problem. . The Fender flats have a thinner end to accommodate this and have a .125 B, but read some poor reviews so took a gamble and so far it has paid off. The strings sound a lovely deep warm tone and I'm hoping to leave them on for as long as they stay on. .Would I get these again. . They're really nice, but I would be tempted to try the La Bellas with the .128, although if these have more tension id stick with these as I wouldn't want to keep on cranking it up. .Incidentally, I've got these strings on a 4 string jazz. I had to give the neck a small tweak, but I also dropped the string height and adjusted the string radius. Again, the strings go through the body and it sounds lovely. Don't be worried about setting up your bass, get the right tools and take your time. . It pays off. . Next to do is my P bass but I think I will put La Bellas on that given the thicker neck!

This was my first use of these strings. A friend recommended them. I like them. Good strings with good feel and good sound. I think for the price point they are of exceptional quality.

Who knew that metal madman Steve Harris of Iron Maiden has played Rotosound flatwound strings since, like, forever? That was a recent trivial fact I learned from Mfgr website and one of my deciding factors in spending $10 extra to replace the stock D'addario roundwounds on my 5-string with these "77s". I couldn't be happier. I have in the past 30 years played a lot of different styles of music but mostly using an electric bass with roundwound strings. I have a rather aggressive dynamic fingerpicking style and these strings feel great on both hands, have less whispery noise when you move across the strings, and sound richer and better (to me) in all clean, distorted, and effected modes. I think these are my new strings, I feel invigorated after playing on them, can't put my axe down, gonna try them on 2 more basses now. Whether you play rock funk jazz blues metal whatever you should give these strings a go.
