I’ve never used a proper kite reel before ordering this one.The verdict is in. It makes so much of a difference to the kite-flying experience that I now consider a reel absolutely essential. You can find both more basic reels costing less and and more full-featured reels costing more, but I feel like this particular reel strikes a nice balance. It’s reassuringly solid despite its mostly plastic construction, and the combination handle/lock feels well executed. The 1000 feet of line included is obviously more than enough for everyday needs, and it’s enough for some peace of mind in case the line snaps or gets caught.I only wish it had come with extra swivels. Including a few would have cost the manufacturer pennies, so it’s too bad. If you need some, look into “fishing swivels” instead of “kite swivels”, which for some reason appear to be considerably cheaper for the same product. As of the date of review in early May 2025, this is the “#1 New Release in Kite Flying Accessories”. Congratulations to the manufacturer. It deserves the spot.

Overall a very nice product. But one negative right up front:As a beginner, this took some getting used to. The first time I tried it, I had a hard time figuring out how to handle it properly, and I managed to get the line quickly tied into a knot somehow, which took some work to undo. The problem is that the line can pretty easily slip over the edge of the wheel, and if you let that happen it can cause all kinds of problems. You need to train yourself to always keep the line in tension and guard against the line slipping off. Some kind of design change to help prevent that would be good.BUT, aside from that learning curve, this thing has been a VERY welcome addition to my kiting. The line and materials seem very strong, being able to hold my kite against 30+ MPH gusts that I was worried might tear right through the wing material. In good wind, I can use this to fly a kite one-handed. By just varying how much pressure I put on the outer wheel with my palm of my fingers, I can match the strength of the wind to keep just the right amount of tension on the kite. This makes it much easier to get it up in the air without running, since I can just let all the pressure go as soon as the wind blows and it will fly freely without me having to madly unwind a bundle of line myself to keep up. I also love how easy it is to reel in- there's never any mess of line on the ground. And once I learned how to use it without tangling, it's just the easiest, most convenient thing. Not to mention the line is ridiculously long. I once let this thing out so far that I couldn't even see the string disappearing into the sky, and I don't think it was even halfway out. At that point even if the line DID somehow break, you'd probably still have enough left to use on the spool.I would definitely recommend this product.

Our kites came with cheap winders that really tore up your hands if you tried to stop them from spinning on fast release. This one solves that problem as long as you stop it with your hand on the right side (the one without the winder). Also due to the size, its much easier to wind a kite back in... I'll be getting another one of these for sure!

What a way to go fly a kite! If you've used string wound on a cardboard tube, it's time to move up to the big leagues. This is a much better way to handle your kite string: easier, faster, more length, and better control. The string/twine which is included is decent, but some people might want to upgrade it. Aside from that, the reel functions beautifully.I did find some information regarding the strength of the string included with the reel. I believe it is 50 lb rated string. This is not the biggest or strongest reel, by any means, but it is a nice small/medium size reel at 7-8" diameter. The mechanics and bearings are smooth and make it easy to use, and the handle folds up and locks in place. It's not an ambidextrous setup or design (per se) , but it might be possible to utilize it left-handed by reversing the string, etc.Another thing I like: it can be taken apart and maintained because it is assembled using bolts, nuts, and screws... instead of rivets or plastic welds. Thus, it can be easily disassembled and cleaned or repaired. If you are thinking of loading up heavier string or twine, you might want to step up in size and durability. This reel is okay for a beginner or smaller kites and lower altitudes, but the plastic probably won't be suitable for pro-level kiting.Overall, it's a good value and a great way to take your kites to new heights.

I do enjoy my kites. But, last year I'd let my OH use my favorite kite with our LO and it came back with the spool quite thoroughly mangled. Like, it looked like it had been run over by a truck. It didn't have all the bells and whistles like this one, but there was sadness. -and then I started shopping. I quickly realized that kite technology had improved quite a bit since I'd bought my last kite. And, that I was going to want a spool much like this one.It has pretty much all the features you'd want. Locks in place when the handle is folded down. Ball bearing rollers make the action ridiculously smooth. Guide to hold the string in the right place. A good long spool of kite string and a carrying bag for it. It's a real step up from my old spool, so suddenly I'm not so sad about the old one being busted. If I had to come up with a feature to wish for, it might be a brake, drag, or tension adjustment. Yes, you can easily accomplish the same thing by just holding onto the thing, but I can see it getting away from you if you're a child and are still getting the hang of kite flying (for example). I think I'd need to lock the handle down before handing it off to our LO. But, that all is a minor gripe. This will make the experience of kite flying so much more enjoyable, particularly the reeling the kite back in part. Very highly recommended.
