I'm no luthier. I bought a cheap old violin and took it to one to fix up, but he wanted $175 to put new pegs on it and he warned me it wasn't worth the effort. So, I decided to have a go at it myself. How hard can it be? Just like sharpening a pencil, right? Not quite. A bit more patience is needed. Ebony is a bit brittle and will fall apart completely if you go at it aggressively. You need to shave it down slowly with this, little by little. Even still, the two pegs I got to work well enough for my purposes are less then perfect. Better than what was on the instrument when I got it though, so I'm happy. Ultimately I also put fine tuners and every string rather than fight with the poorly fit pegs. Patience is key with this device, but it can get the job done.
