You can feel the heat of the solid metal chassis, but works GREAT, super fast! When you first plug it into your Windows machine it will most likely only connect at 2.5g (if your switch supports multi-gig). You'll need to get the drivers installed, but once installed, 5gbps is a go! Good deal vs other 5gbps NICs!

While I could not verify the 5 Gbps functionality of the USB adapter (as I lack it in my home lab), I was able to confirm that at least 2.5 Gbps (link speed) works. This adapter is compact and does not require any drivers to function (assuming you are on a newer version of Windows or macOS). Note that drivers are available, if needed, from this vendor/manufacturer. However, I would recommend just getting them directly from Realtek (look up RTL8157) to ensure that you have the latest available version.It's a great addition to an IT professional's daily carry bag. Especially as most laptops only have built-in gigabit Ethernet adapters. So, having this on hand comes in handy when you need to test, use, or verify higher-speed connections. Especially in data centers or enterprise environments.For home users, it is important to point out that you will need a more recent router and/or network switch capable of running those higher speeds. Otherwise, you may be capped at running a gigabit speed (1000 Mbps; 1 Gbps) on your internal network (LAN). Also, in order to increase your internet download speeds, you would still need a more recent router (like I mentioned above) that has a multi-gig WAN port and a sufficient internet connection. -- In either case, the link speed (that we have been referring to) does not equal download speed. They are not the same thing.Outside of all that, I will be sure to update this review once I've had an opportunity to verify the 5 Gbps speeds or if I encounter any issues during long-term use.

The adapter package has a link for the drivers. They will make it quite compatible with Windows- no issues with the one I received. Price is decent as well.This adapter is nice, well built and seems quite durable. It has self-radiating cooling for heat dissipation which is important seeing it runs hot when at full speed. If you have an older Synology NAS, this will most likely work providing you install the proper drivers for it. There are a lot of videos and sites showing how to do it.I have a mixed network system. I ordered this to upgrade the 2.5gbps usb to ethernet adapter I installed in my nas- another one from this company I ordered on Amazon a while ago. I'm upgrading my network to 10gbps for future upgrades. This 5gbps adapter is a nice interum upgrade.So far, it's working without any issues pushing just over 500MBps. It's worthy of recommendation imho. Just make sure you give it a little room to dissipate heat. I have a small cheap usb fan on mine when moving a bunch of large files just to be safe. So far, so good.
