Your cart is empty. Lignum Vitae heartwood is dark greenish brown to almost black and sharply demarcated from the pale yellow or cream-colored sapwood. Texture is very fine; grain is strongly interlocked; a slight scent is evident when warmed or rubbed. It has a characteristic oily feel due to the resin content that may be as high as one-fourth of the air-dry weight. Somewhat difficult to work with hand or machine tools, the wood turns and shapes well and takes a high polish. Because of oily resins, it requires special surface treatments for satisfactory gluing.

If you want Argentine lignum vitae, this is what you need to purchase. Guayacan is "Argentine" lignum vitae.I have a small supply of genuine lignum vitae. The scientific species name of true genuine lignum vitae is Guaiacum officinale.I purchased two pieces from the local Woodcraft store thinking that the product offered was genuine lignum vitae.Because both species are sold covered in a thick wax coating, the outward appearance appears to be the same.The sawing and turning charactistics of Guaycan is very different from Guaiacum. Even the scent is different. The Argentine stuff is sweeter smelling. Guaiacum officinale is slightly sour smelling and less pronounced.Other than familarity with the scent and working characteristics of each spiecies of wood, the only way to differentiate between the two is by cutting and polishing the end grain.Because of the scarcity and extremely limited availablity of true Guaiacum officinale, Argentine lignum vitae is sold as lignum vitae. I have actually bought a sizeable amount wood represented as lignum vitae, only to discover that it was really not Guaiacum officinale, but the Argentine stuff.If you are in the market for real lignum vitae beware, it will be very expensive and you may not receive what you want.

I couldn't tell you if this was genuine Guayacan wood, but it seemed like the right stuff. It was very dense and waxy. It did not look much like the photograph; mine was much darker with the grain barely visible. There was a pretty good chunk missing off one edge, but I had more than I needed.
