NOTE

In conducting the test, if the sharp edge of the lead is slightly chipped or crumbled, the lead must be resharpened.

  • Place the coated panel on a level, firm, horizontal surface. Starting with the hardest lead, hold the pencil or lead holder firmly with the lead against the film at a 45° angle (point away from the operator) and push away from the operator. Exert sufficient uniform pressure downward and forward either to cut or scratch the film or to crumble the edge of the lead. It is suggested that the length of the stroke be 1 ⁄ 4 in. (6.5 mm).
  • Repeat the process down the hardness scale until a pencil is found that will not cut through the film to the substrate(either metal or a previous coat) for a distance of at least 1 ⁄ 4 in. (6.5 mm) .

Bubble level on first one was cracked and had to return it. But the second one we received work perfectly. We purchased a set of Staedtler pencils for the softer B2 through B6, which was a good thing because the finish we tested ended up being 3B to 2B. The pencil set we purchased had B9 through H9 and included F and HB.Purchased sandpaper sharpener (sometimes called compass lead sharpener) to flatten the ends of the sharpened pencil as required by ASTM D3363.Would recommend purchasing a "KUM A2" two hole pencil sharpener. It saves a lot of time in sharpening the pencil into a barrel also required by ASTM D3363 for B2 and harder. And the second tapered hole on the KUM A2 is tapered for B3 and softer.Everything fits nicely inside the aluminum case, including the extra items. Although we kept the pencils in the case it came for ease of locating the hardness. The liner is cheap foam, but the case is sturdy. Discarded the cut sandpaper and scotch-brite pad and used clean cotton cloth instead. To be fair, none of the other manufacturers include the accessories we purchased need to properly testing.
