SmallRig 2983 is a formfitting full cage designed to provide protection and accessory mounts. The cage secures to the camera via a 1/4”-20 screw on the bottom and an m2.5 screw on the right side for further security to prevent twisting.

Everything about this cage is great. Solid build quality, sufficient mounting holes placed decently. But the bar that goes over the top right DIRECTLY over where the power switch is...I can't believe Smallrig OK'd this. I have long skinny fingers and it's still a huge pain in you-know-what to turn the camera on and off every single time.The Black Mamba cage fixes this but at a much higher cost. Truthfully, if i'd known i would have spent the extra money and got that one, but the fact that this one has such a big design flaw is extremely disappointing.

I used this on my S5 for a couple years, never had reviewed it. It's convenient if you need to put a lot on it. the cable clamp spot for usb isn't really positions very well, if you use it the screen can't be moved, usually that's fine. I took it off some months ago a couple times to rig other ways and use it smaller and after that the tiniest screw hole on the right side stripped super easily so it's worthless now, if the holes were cut deeper than like 2mm it would still be fine. So might be ok if you plan to only stick it on and never remove it again.

I needed a cage that I can rig up for video and not have to remove for photography. I can confirm that this cage on a Panasonic S5 will fit the XLR1 module, speedlights, and radio triggers for off camera flash. My only complaint is that this does not have the left side coldshoe mount. With my particular rig setup, an on-camera shotgun in the right cold shoe interferes with holding a top handle with my right hand. My top handle coldshoe is taken up by my monitor.

Great cage with plenty of holes for attachments. Design is better than the competitor’s that starts with a “t”.

Well built cage, has plenty of attachment points for field monitor, side handle, quick release plates, etc. The frame does add some weight, but it's not much. The added material by the grip is much appreciated, I finally feel like I can get a good comfortable grip on this S5. Only thing I'll note, due to having the extra mounting screw going through the right strap mount of the camera, it's not as easy as I'd like to remove the camera from the cage (when wanting to go as low weight as possible). However, the screw does provide great stability between the camera and cage. Just consider your use case, if you want to remove the camera from the cage frequently, maybe look at other options. Otherwise, super happy with this purchase!

In the years I’ve owned different cameras I’ve always had cages. I had my S5 for a couple weeks and told myself get a cage. Well the 2nd day of having the cage installed with my camera on my tripod... I accidentally kicked the tripod and the camera went to the floor. I’m so glad I got the cage because it literally saved my new camera from being damaged! Invest in protection for your gear!
