Since the stock latch tabs for most water heaters are plastic, they can degrade in the sun, break, and then your water heater door ends up falling open. If that happens on the road it could damage or destroy it, which, especially if it's painted to match, could be an expensive thing to replace. These metal latches won't do that.The one thing I'm not crazy about with these is that they aren't as stable as the original one, which makes it a little harder to get it lined up. The plastic one tended to stay pointing straight out, sometimes this one will shift to the side. It's not a huge deal, but it's one drawback to these.
