This is a heavy duty snake grabbing tool. I'm still getting used to the ratchet motion of the grabbing end and I'm afraid that I'll hurt the snake but it works very well. I just need a little more practice with it. The locking/ratcheting mechanism is not the easiest to operate, feels a little wobbly, but it does work ok. I find that it's best to press on both sides of it at the same time to move it, rather than just trying to move it on one side. Nothing to deduct a star for. It's nice that this came with replacement parts, although I don't expect to need them for a long while as this is solidly built. We have water moccasins and water snakes so if I'm unsure about one I'll definitely be using this tool instead of the hook to relocate if needed.

As a reference to my experience with snake grabbers I have purchased many of both this type and the blue one.The positive of this one is they cost less than the blue type. The reason I guess is the handle is less robust. The spring mechanism to actuate it also sticks out and can catch on things. I've had that break before on them. Plus side there's a full replacement kit that comes with it. This saves about 25% of the cost though so it makes a big difference. The ones I've broken before were not used for snake grabbing. We used them for reaching into equipment and dragging stuff out. The cable sticking out got torn off. We weren't gentle and it wasn't a normal use case. They also lasted awhile so it's not really a dig against them. The dragging tore the spring off. The rest was fine.Since thus is a bit less robust does that mean it's not still high quality that can last years? Absolutely not. The shaft is steel. The handle is still decently strong. The jaws are a thick metal. The cable is braided stainless steel. The spring is strong. Every nut has nyloc to make sure it doesn't come undone. Can you grab a 8ft 2x4 and drag it across the yard? Absolutely. The grip strength is super strong.

I deal with a lot of snakes here on the farm, my kids call it the snake farm. Mostly Black snakes in the chicken coop, in the wife's garden, and occasionally in and around the house. I have a couple resident Speckled Kingsnakes by the garage, but I like to just leave them to keep rodents down and they are pretty. I also have to deal with Timber Rattlers and Copperheads a couple times a year. The Black snakes are always just grabbed by hand and the venomous ones I have a homemade noose on a 5' broomstick to wrangle them with. This will definitely come in handy this summer. I feel it is sturdy enough to do the job, well made, and I like the locking feature. I've had my stick for over ten years now and I hope this gives me the same confidence I had in it. I guess I will see how it performs when I do need it. Hopefully I can try it on a Black snake before going all in on a rattler. Again, feels solid, locks on snake, and price is reasonable too.

This is my first snake catch pole so I can not say if it is better or worse than others. I do know this one has a solid heavy-duty one-piece pole with the main working parts riveted to the pole. They are made out of heavy-gauge metal and well attached. The other working parts, a cable, spring, and a few smaller parts look well attached and good to go. The coolest part about this one, the parts that will wear out in time, they give you a complete replacement set of the working parts for a spare. So after the main parts wear out a few years down the road, you can rebuild or repair it, and you basically have a brand new one again. I usually have to run and find a pole or something to catch and relocate a snake I see around my home. Now I can safely use these to pick it up and carry it to the woods. So much better on me and the snake. Very happy.

These work as advertised, but I don't think the quality matches the price. The latch ratchet system is cheaply made and a hit and miss affair. The screws and bolts used are cheap looking and do not look like they will last.On the plus side, they give you and extra cable for the mechanism. Which I think is an indicator of how long the original will last.We live in Oklahoma and get non-venomous and venomous snakes on our property. I like having the non-venomous snakes around, but I often need to relocate them. These make it much easier, allowing me to keep safely away from the critters (even garter snakes like to bite when threatened)

I "picked this up" as there are a fair number of times that items fall behind my tool chest and other such locations. Figured the added length would be handy. I am not a snake wrangler, but generally feel most tools can be used for other tasks that they may not have been made for.PRO:This is solidly constructed. All metal, save for the vinyl coating on the handle. You can give it a pretty good squeeze without concern that the tool is going to give out. A steel cable runs the length of the tool (inside for most of the run) so it's not flimsy construction at all. Included with the tool is a full replacement of the cable, including the ferrules to create the loops, plus a replacement spring. The length of the reach is right around 4 feet.CON:The added length makes moving this a bit awkward if holding it out at a distance. Shouldn't be a problem if you are sliding it along the ground to snag a serpent, but repeatedly picking up litter is not a task well suited to this device. The pinchers themselves are fixed and don't rotate to different angles -- probably very helpful for controlling a snake but a bit more awkward for other tasks. In the end, I bet these are great for snakes though I don't intend to find out. For grabbing things that are about four feet away, these should do the trick. If the item you want is reachable with another tool, then you probably would want to use your alternative.
